Available either latex-based, wet and ready to use, or as a gypsum-based dry powder to be mixed on site, Ashland Aqualon Functional Ingredients has a wide range of performance-leading, functional additives for modifying applications of joint compounds and fillers.
Joint fillers are dry mixed products based on beta-hemihydrate gypsum as binder, mineral fillers as aggregates and additives. The main additives used are cellulose ethers, which provide mostly water retention and starch ethers as thickeners and set retarders. Redispersible powders (e.g., polyvinylacetate homopolymers) are occasionally added to improve surface wet adhesion and surface hardness. Water is the diluent, which allows the free flow and workability of the fillers and reacts with the gypsum causing the mass to harden.
Latex-based Benefits
- Can apply to the wall directly from the container
- Storage stability in the container

Gypsum-based Benefits
- Mix on-site with water for smooth and creamy consistency
- Promotes hydration, causing the mass to harden and bond
