Guar and Guar Derivatives

Galactasol® Guar and Guar Derivatives from Ashland Aqualon Functional Ingredients -- with excellent carrying capacity for supporting proppants in oil or gas well applications -- are a family of polymers based on galactomannan derived from guar beans.

Guar Gum

Straight guar is produced from natural guar without chemical modification. Guar derivatives range from a single derivatization -- producing Hydroxypropyl Guar (HPG) and Carboxymethyl Guar (CMG) -- to dual derivatization, producing Carboxymethyl Hydroxypropyl Guar (CMHPG).

Galactasol® guar and guar derivatives are used as gellants to produce high cross-linked fracturing fluid viscosity. They can be crosslinked with a number of transitional metal ions, including borates -- ideal for proppant carrying capacity in created fracturing areas. The crosslinked gel can be broken by either acids, enzymes or encapsulated oxidizers. They can also be used in low-solids drilling fluids as a viscosifier and as a fluid loss reducer in both freshwater and brines, particularly in spud muds.

Galactasol® Hydroxypropyl Guar (HPG) is the stimulation fluid you need for good thermal stability and excellent carrying capacity to support sand or other proppants (when crosslinked). It is a nonionic, polymeric viscosifier that rapidly develops high viscosity, depending on solution temperature and shear rate. Like aqueous systems, HPG is primarily used in stimulation of oil and gas wells as a fracturing fluid. Galactasol® Hydroxypropyl Guar polymers are self-hydrating -- eliminating the need for external buffers or acids. They hydrate well in both cold and warm water and offer excellent alcohol and monovalent salt tolerance.

Galactasol® Carboxymethyl Hydroxypropyl Guar (CMHPG)

CMHPG is an anionic guar for fracturing in the oil and gas recovery. Viscosity build over time depends on pH, shear rates, and temperature. Galactasol® CMHPG is often a self-hydrating polymer, requiring no external buffer systems to control viscosity development, and it also performs well in cold environments. While sensitive to salts, Galactasol CMHPG will quickly develop functional viscosity and is alcohol tolerant. As a stimulation fluid, Galactasol® CMHPG polymers offer good thermal stability and can be crosslinked with a number of transitional metal ions, including borates. Galactasol® CMHPG also provides excellent carrying capacity to support sand or other proppants.
