For excellent binder properties and high green strength look to Ashland Aqualon Functional Ingredients' products for ceramics. From automotive catalytic converters to porcelain fixtures, our polymers exhibit clean burnout and an excellent balance between plasticity and shape retention under high temperatures.
Advanced Ceramics
Our cellulose ethers act as binders designed to improve water retention in advanced ceramics. This functional property enables plasticity of non-plastic mixes, improves mechanical strength after drying (green strength), prevents formation of cracks and blisters, and ensures uniform, controlled drying.
Traditional Ceramics
Traditional ceramics include tableware, clay brick, tile, and porcelain. During the initial stages of ceramic production, a binder system is used to improve the workability of the powdered material and increase the mechanical strength of the unfired product.
AQUALON® carboxymethylcellulose is particularly suited for use as a binder as it provides high green strength at relatively low addition levels, while producing excellent plasticity and clean burnout upon firing.
Ceramic Glazes
Ceramic glazes protect the surface of the substrate by increasing scratch resistance, surface hardness and preventing water absorption.
AQUALON® carboxymethylcellulose, when used in applied glazes, provides the superior adhesive properties needed to porduce a strong, tight bond between the glaze and the ceramic substrate. Once hardened, the glaze will protect the ceramic surface from damage prior to firing.
