Paper and Paper Coatings Applications

Paper 

AQUALON® carboymethylcellulose (CMC) is frequently employed in towel applications for increasing the wet and dry strength of the paper product. It is generally added to the thick stock along with wet strength resins where, with proper utilization, it greatly enhances towel strength and durability.

AQUALON® CMC is also used at the calendar stacks for curl control in paperboard grades as well as in specialty grades of paperalong with Natrosol® hydroxyethylcellulose. Specialty grades include food packaging (for grease-proofing), silicone release coatings, and carbonless papers for ink enhancement.

Galactasol® guar derivatives are used in paper for their effectiveness as a formation aid in newsprint and recycled board and for their drainage and retention properties. An added benefit is the low BOD and improved water quality that guars provide to the paper making operation.

Paper Coatings 

High purity carboxymethylcellulose is commonly used in traditional pigmented paper coatings. Hydroxyethylcellulose is employed in more specialized coatings including high quality woodfree, bleached board, and recycled board grades. Easy-to-use liquid versions of selected CMC and HEC products are available for use in those paper coatings with the highest performance objectives.

LIBERTY™ fluidized polymer suspension (FPS), ADMIRAL® FPS and INCISOR® FPS provide unique coating properties and outstanding performance including the very highest water retention, improved runnability, enhanced glossing/calendaring, smoothness, print mottle reduction, and brightness in a number of pigment systems.

Ashland Aqualon Functional Ingredients also offeres KLUCEL® hydroxypropylcellulose, CULMINAL® methylcellulose and methylhydroxypropylcellulose, and NATROSOL® hydroxyethylcellulose as specialized ingredients for ink jet papers and transparencies.
