Specialties Solutions Applications

Adhesives and Glues  - A wide-range of polymer and rheology modifiers for several high performance adhesive systems such as industrial, aerospace, medical and construction.

Agricultural Products - Agricultural chemicals deliver cost-effective, unique properties such as film forming, water retention, and low viscosity for common use in dust suppressant products.

Ceramics - Advanced Ceramics, Traditional Ceramics, and Ceramic Glaze Products provide excellent binder properties, high green strength, good cohesion and adhesion of glazes and engobes, and excellent glazing properties. End-use applications range from automotive and industrial catalytic converters to porcelain figures.

Civil Engineering - AQUALON® SC-50 polymer and AquaVIS® polymers are extensively employed as additives for bentonite-containing aqueous engineering fluids; effectively thickening the bentonite dispersion to provide wall stability, improve fluid loss control and act as a barrier to open formations.

Electronics - Within the electronics industry, Ashland Aqualon Functional Ingredients specializes in organic solvent-soluble cellulose that acts as binding agents with clean burn-out performance.

Fire-Fighting Fluids - Fast-dissolving GALACTASOL® guar derivatives build rheology of fire-fighting fluids to impart cohesion and prevent misting of these solutions during aerial drops onto fires.

Freezer Gels - Freezer gels made with AQUALON® carboxymethylcellulose can maintain their firm texture and cold temperature for several hours, allowing the gel pack to absorb external heat while simultaneously cooling the surface and surrounding objects.

Industrial Cleaners - AQUALON® cellulose ethers find a wide range of utility for viscosity enhancement, stabilization, particle suspension, and rheology modifications in several diverse applications.

Inks & Printing - AQUALON® ethylcellulose (EC) is a key binder for gravure printing inks as well as a thickening binder in flexographic and screen printing inks, providing scuff resistance, adhesion, fast solvent release, film formation, and outstanding viscosity control. Lithographic Printing and Fountain Solutions and Textile Printing.

Mining - AQUALON® polymer-based products are used for taconite iron ore pelletization and as flotation depressants for hydrophobic gangue in froth flotation.

Paint Removers - AQUALON® water-soluble polymers thicken solvent-based paint removers to provide easier application, enhanced vertical cling and slow solvent evaporation. They can also improve the performance of the so-called “flush off” paint removers.

Paper and Paper Coatings

Paper - AQUALON® carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) increases wet and dry strength in towel applications.  AQUALON® CMC and HEC products are also frequently used at the calendar stacks for curl control and in specialty grades of paper, such as food packaging (for grease-proofing) and in carbonless papers for ink enhancement.

Paper Coatings – A range of high purity CMCs for use in traditional paper coating formulations. Several hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) products are also employed for more specialized coatings including high quality free sheet, bleached board, recycled board, ink jet and transparencies.

Suspension Polymerization - Aqualon KLUCEL® hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) is employed as a colloidal stabilizer in the suspension polymerization of polyvinylchloride (S-PVC). KLUCEL® HPC improves thermostability of PVC better than other polymers such as polyvinylalcohol.

Tobacco - CULMINAL® methylcellulose (MC) and methylhydroxyethylcellulose (MHEC) are used as a binder for reconstituted tobacco sheets for cigar wrappers, minimizing cracks, lumps and shrinkage of the sheets during drying. AQUALON® water-soluble polymers provide a uniform appearance, high tenacity (tearing strength) and sheet elasticity.

Welding Rods - AQUALON® carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and AQUALON® hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) polymers are employed during the welding rod extrusion process to improve bonding and coating uniformity of the flux to the core.
